"When it comes to nuclear energy, your government will have to decide based on the conclusions made by your scientists," Oettinger said at a meeting with members of the parliament's committees for European and Foreign Affairs.
On one hand, Lithuania will not be able to build a nuclear plant by itself, the EC member said.
"Lithuania alone is too small for such a project," said the commissioner.
Speaking about the European Union's (EU) attitude, he said that it is the EU duty to demand the highest technological standards in line with the parameters envisaged by the EU.
Oettinger notes that nuclear energy accounts for 30 percent of energy in Europe; however, 18 countries are determined to close down their nuclear utilities.
