European Parliament not inclined to increase funding for Ignalina plant decommissioning

Lithuania’s efforts to get bigger EU support for the decommissioning of shut-down Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP) encounter more and more challenges, the Lietuvos Rytas daily reports on Thursday.

“Lithuania has already used one billion euros to decommission the nuclear power plant in Ignalina, but it can be switched on even today. Is it normal?” – MEP Marian-Jean Marinescu, the Committee on Budgetary Control rapporteur on the decommissioning of INPP, told the daily.

Lithuania asks to earmark 770 million euros for the decommissioning of INPP but the European Commission (EC) agrees to extend just 200 million euros.

“Lithuania should also look for sources of funding itself. It is a responsibility of the state. Moreover, Lithuania has to answer clearly where specifically one billion euros has been used,” Marinescu said.

According to him, if Lithuania is dissatisfied with the EU proposal, it can use structural support and the agricultural support funds for the decommissioning of the nuclear facility. Meanwhile, Lithuania’s negotiators call such a scenario "a nightmare”.
