"The party decided to propose the position to Evaldas Gustas. The prime minister spoke to him and he promised to give an answer within a few hours," Parliamentary Vice-Speaker Gediminas Kirkilas told journalists after the board meeting of the Social Democrats.
In his words, the new minister will have to take over soon.
"The most important issue now is that the new minister will have to take over the work soon, as the work cannot wait. This is because economic councils are among the key ones and will go first and under a schedule during the Lithuanian presidency (over the European Union Council), therefore, the new minister will have to take over immediately without any warm-up," he said.
Kirkilas said the Social Democratic Party's board hasn't decided what position should be reserved for Birutė Vėsaitė who is stepping down as economy minister on Monday.
On Wednesday, Lithuania's President Dalia Grybauskaitė signed a decree to sack Vėsaitė from the leading position at the Economy Ministry.
