The minister took part in a round-table discussion of the Foreign Policy Association's 2012 World Leadership Forum in New York and underlined the importance of a disciplined fiscal policy and energy security for the future of the European Union, the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Thursday.
"Lithuania seeks to meet the Maastricht criteria and implement a stringent fiscal policy," the minister said.
In his words, increasing cooperation of the so-called Nordic Bow countries in implementing responsible a fiscal policy could be a good example for other EU member states facing economic hardship.
Ažubalis said that euro stability is guaranteed by EU member sates' political determination to ensure implementation of euro stability control mechanisms.
The Lithuanian foreign minister also underlined that the elimination of the region's energy isolation is important for stepping up growth of the Baltic states.
"The implementation of strategic energy projects, including the construction of an LNG terminal, new nuclear power plant, and power and gas links with the EU, is the key priority of the Lithuanian government," Ažubalis said.
