The minister said on Wednesday he could hardly image the reinstatement of a person who is suspected of having leaked classified information.
"It would be strange to employ at the FCIS a person who is suspected of having leaked certain information in the Snoras story. He is a suspect, that's his status," Melianas told journalists.
According to the minister, the court ruling "does not deny results of two polygraph tests … which showed that this former officer was lying."
"The Ministry of the Interior and the former minister made their decisions based on information from the State Security Department, and the court ruling is based on certain procedural aspects which, to my mind, are not significant. Nevertheless, the court ruling did not deny that Mr. Giržadas was lying, i.e., it did not rule out the fact that the polygraph showed that he was not telling the truth. I think these are significant things when we are talking about such a high-ranking official," Melianas said.
The minister said he had no doubt a court of higher instance "will look into not only formal procedures but all the other significant circumstances."
Melianas also refused to evaluate whether the State Security Department did everything in this case.
"I would really not want to evaluate the SSD. (…) I am not sure. We have received information, reports, and I would not like to judge whether these procedural things were done properly or not," he said.
Vilnius Regional Administrative Court ruled on Tuesday that Giržadas has to be reinstated.
The court also awarded Giržadas a non-pecuniary compensation of LTL 20,000 and LTL 6,000 per every month of forced leave in pecuniary damages.
The court also canceled two orders by former Minister of the Interior Raimundas Palaitis on candidate verification and dismissal as running counter to existing legal acts.
