Irena Degutiene not to run for Conservative party's leadership

Lithuania's former parliamentary speaker Irena Degutiene confirmed on Monday she would not run for chairmanship of the opposition Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats (Conservatives).

She emphasized that the majority of the party's offices have proposed the current leader Andrius Kubilius, the former prime minister, adding she doesn't want to cause „additional tensions.“

„There are problems within the party but the offices are proposing Andrius Kubilius, and I think no additional tensions within the party are necessary, therefore, I made a firm decision not to participate“, -I. Degutiene told BNS.

In her words, this time the decision to stay out of the race for leadership is easier than two years ago when most of party offices nominated a few candidates each. I.Degutiene then lost the election to A.Kubilius.
