His candidacy was supported by 93 parliamentarians in a secret ballot, 15 were against.
In his presentation to the parliament, Auštrevičius spoke about the responsibilities the parliament will have during Lithuania's upcoming presidency over the European Union (EU) later this year.
Auštrevičius was proposed to the post by Parliamentary Speaker Vydas Gedvilas of the Labor Party.
"He is a politician with extensive experience and seniority, he is rather active, is a founder of the European Club that organizes a number of events, has international experience, he is a politician of international recognition, he makes reports at conferences and seminars," Gedvilas said.
Under the Seimas Statute, candidates for parliamentary vice-speaker is proposed by the speaker after discussions with political groups. The vice-speakers must include two or three opposition representatives.
Other parliamentary vice-speakers include Vytautas Gapšys of the Labor Party, Social Democrats Gediminas Kirkilas and Algirdas Sysas, Kęstas Komskis of the Order and Justice Party, Jaroslav Neverovič of the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania, and conservative Irena Degutienė who represents the opposition.
