“Euro zone is a community of world’s leading highly developed economies, despite all those difficulties it is facing – and show me a group of countries that does not face any difficulties. For us, joining the euro zone would be a very important impetus in economic terms,” he said in an interview to Ziniu Radijas on Thursday.
“Me personally, I see strong prospects for the euro zone, this project is very strong,” Sadzius added.
The minister said that he disagreed with a statement by well-known economist Paul Krugman that the euro had turned into a trap.
“I would dare disagree with Mr. Krugman. The euro zone has proved its strength during that period of its existence by fighting these difficulties, although it may sound paradoxical. There have been more of those difficult critical situations, which we now see in Cyprus. I would dare say that each of those situations made the euro zone stronger, made it develop new understanding and new perspective, including the tasks it shall carry out,” the minister said.
The euro competed with the US dollar on global markets, which might have been the reason affecting the reasoning of certain US economists, Sadzius said.
The Lithuanian government seeks to adopt the euro in 2015. Many economists approve of this target yet some of them warn that the country might actually fail to meet the requirements due to excessive inflation.
