Lithuania's Liberal and Centre Union conciders merging with Order and Justice Party

One of Lithuania's political parties, the Liberal and Center Union, may consider during its assembly in March congress the possibility of merging with the ruling Order and Justice Party, the party's vice-chairman Dalia Straupaitė has said.

"Of course, there are different opinions within the party. However, it seems to me that merger with the Rolandas Paksas-led party would be one of the best options," Straupaitė, mayor of the Visaginas district, told Lietuvos Žinios daily.

In her opinion, three strong political forces – the Social Democrats, Conservatives and Liberals – would suffice for Lithuania.

Algis Čaplikas, acting leader of the Liberal and Center Union, said that a discussion was underway in the party, with an ad hoc task group analyzing all possible options. Nevertheless, he said the Liberal Centrists might stay a separate political party.

During the last general elections in October 2012, the Liberal and Center Union secured merely 2 percent of the vote and did not qualify for seats in the Seimas.
