Melianas, deputy chairman of the Liberal and Center Union, should meet with President Dalia Grybauskaitė later on Tuesday.

The position of interior minister has been vacant since the resignation of Liberal Centrist Raimundas Palaitis amid criticism of the ruling conservatives over sacking of top officers of the Financial Crimes Investigation Service.

In Valentinavičius' words, the PM's step is aimed at harmonious performance of the ruling coalition and implementation of key energy projects.

According to the proposal, Melianas should be appointed to head the Interior Ministry as of next Monday.

Melianas told BNS he was scheduled to meet with Grybauskaitė at 11 AM, adding he attached major importance to the prime minister's confidence.

"I find it very important to have the prime minister's confidence in me, although I personally think that Raimondas Šukys is a very strong candidate," Melianas said.

Asked about priority tasks, Melianas referred to public security, protection of the European Union's (EU) external border and efforts against human trafficing.

Asked whether the situation of the sacked FCIS chiefs had been discussed with the prime minister, the candidate said the situation could be addressed with legal measures. In Melianas' words, the FCIS restructuring had not been addressed in detail so far.

According to the Lithuanian Constitution, ministers are appointed and dismissed by the president upon the prime minister's proposal.

Kubilius met with Melianas last Thursday.
