On Wednesday, the government decided to propose to President Dalia Grybauskaitė to appoint Lithuania's Ambassador to Spain Audra Plepytė-Jara as the country's permanent representative to the UNWTO as of 16 July.
Lithuania hasn’t had its UNWTO representative so far.
Last year, the country considered leaving the organization as membership was not financial beneficial. The Ministry of Economy said then that membership expenses were not proportionate to benefit.
On Wednesday, Laura Paulauskienė of the Ministry of Economy told BNS the appointment of permanent representative to the UNWTO would step up cooperation with this organization.
"The government decided against leaving the organization after weighing all pros and cons. Since we are not leaving, we are trying to step up cooperation," Paulauskienė told BNS.
Lithuania joined the UNWTO in 2003 and was the first Baltic state to do so. Latvia joined in 2005 and Estonia is not a member.

Lithuania to appoint permanent representative to UNWTO
Lithuania plans to appoint the country's permanent representative to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), despite having considered leaving the organization last year. Lithuania wants to strengthen cooperation with the UNWTO.
