Lithuania plans to facilitate rules making it easier for stateless persons to qualify for the country's citizenship.

Based on amendments to the Law on Citizenship proposed by the Ministry of the Interior, a stateless person born in the territory of Lithuania will get Lithuanian citizenship if he or she has legally resided in Lithuania for the last five years, has no citizenship of other country, and meets all other requirements.

The amendments are related to Lithuania's plans to join the United Nations Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness.

"In terms of international law, statelessness is an undesirable phenomenon as stateless persons have fewer rights. By joining the Convention, Lithuania would show respect for existing global standards and human rights," the bill states.
