Lithuanian ForMin: British immigration policy is not directed against honest EU citizens

British Prime Minister David Cameron's immigration policy is not directed against honest citizens of the European Union but against persons who misuse the social care system, Rasa Jakilaitiene, spokeswoman for the minister of foreign affairs, told BNS on Monday when asked to comment on the British government's announced plans to restrict access for new immigrants to its unemployment, healthcare and housing benefits.

„The issue of improvement and accessibility of the social care system for EU citizens is the United Kingdom's internal issue as long as it does not breach international and EU laws. Lithuanian citizens study in the United Kingdom, work in various areas, pay taxes and contribute to the United Kingdom's economy ,“ Jakilaitiene told BNS.

„The Cameron government's policy on immigration issues is directed not against working honest EU citizens but against persons who misuse the existing social care system in the United Kingdom,“ she said.

The United Kingdom is the most popular emigration destination among Lithuanians. Official figures show over 95,000 Lithuanians live in the UK, with almost 40,000 living in London.
