Lithuanian MP Neringa Venckienė disappears without trace

Members of the Path of Courage party's parliamentary group in the Lithuanian Seimas claim they don't know where their leader Neringa Venckienė is. Venckienė has not been seen in parliament for several weeks.

MP Vytautas Matulevičius of the Path of Courage party does not rule out the possibility that Venckienė might ask for political asylum abroad.

"I will express my opinion. I personally do not discount the possibility that Venckienė might ask for political asylum in a foreign country. But this is my assumption. There are countries with the rule of law, where human rights, laws, and international conventions are respected," Matulevičius told reporters on Tuesday.

Venckienė has not been seen in the Seimas since April 9, when lawmakers granted a request from the Prosecutor General's Office to revoke Venckienė's legal immunity so she can stand trial.

Venckienė is suspected of failure to respect a court ruling and hand over her niece, then in her care, to her mother as well as of resistance to police officers.

Prosecutors want to bring suspicions against Venckienė based on six articles of the Penal Code.
