Paulauskas announced on Thursday that he collected signatures of 36 parliamentarians and registered a draft resolution.

"Amid growing globalization, the issue of dual citizenship has been causing more and more discussions and controversial opinions. The Constitution does not allow citizens of Lithuania to be citizens of other countries, therefore, the referendum would seek to amend Part 2 of Article 12 of the Constitution with a provision that citizens of Lithuania can hold citizenship of other countries," Paulauskas said in a press release.

Under the current wording of the Citizenship Law, dual citizenship is allowed to those who fled Lithuania before it regained independence in 1990. Those who have dual citizenship from birth have to pick one of the two citizenship after turning 18.

For referendum to be successful, more than half of Lithuania's eligible voters have to cast their votes.
