The motion to exclude the bill from the agenda was supported by 75 parliamentarians, while nine were against and 14 abstained. The mixed group was unanimously in support of deletion, in addition to many ruling conservatives, opposition Order and Justice and Labor Party members.
Registered by Andrius Burba of the ruling Liberal and Center Union, the draft law on euthanasia suggested that it would be performed at a request of a fatally ill person, given that the doctor performing euthanasia is convinced that the patient is suffering from constant and unbearable physical and spiritual pain that cannot be alleviated and that the wish to have euthanasia is not a spontaneous whim.
The MP said that adoption of a law on euthanasia would fill a gap in legal regulation.
According to an explanatory note, euthanasia is fully legal and allowed in both active and passive forms in Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.
