Under the bill registered by the political group, a doctor would only be allowed to terminate pregnancy, if the pregnancy jeopardizes the mother's life or health, or amid justified suspicions of the pregnancy resulting from criminal deeds.
Terminating pregnancy under the circumstances would be allowed until the 12th week of pregnancy.
Currently, Lithuanian laws allow terminating pregnancy until the 12th week without any additional conditions. About 10,000 pregnancies are terminated every year in the country.
In the European Union (EU), abortions are banned in Malta, Ireland, and Poland. The remaining member-states, including Lithuania, allow abortions until a certain point into pregnancy, the term ranges between the 10th and 18th week.
