Lithuanian president criticizes bid to restore public service wages but signs bill into law

Lithuania's President Dalia Grybauskaitė has signed the bill on restoring the pre-crisis level of wages in the public sector into law, but stated that the path chosen in line with the Constitutional Court's ruling is "not the most optimal one."

"The path chosen in line with the Constitutional Court's ruling is not the most optimal one. However, the amendments envisage a specific mechanism of implementation of the Constitutional Court's ruling and allows starting the process to restore the wages that were slashed in the wake of the crisis," the president said in a press release.

Grybauskaitė also stated that the government should not forget about the people who were not included into the appeal to the Constitutional Court.

Last week, the Seimas decided to increase wages of certain civil servants, including judges, special service and national defense officers, correction officers, deputy ministers and MP aides.

Opposition Conservatives and Liberals refused to participate in the ballot.

In line with the amendments, bonuses for civil servants based on qualification classes would be increased to 20 percentage points, from 5 percentage points. However, wages of the civil servants of those categories would still not reach the pre-crisis level, since the basic wage, which stood at 490 litas (EUR 142) back in 2008, would be left at 450 litas.

The opposition Conservatives had proposed amendments on execution of the Constitutional Court's ruling with lower basic wages coefficients than proposed by the ruling parties, at the same time raising the basic size of salaries.
