Lithuanian president: EU economy suspended by high energy prices

High energy prices are the main obstacle to economic development of the European Union (EU), therefore, it is crucial to search for alternatives to "expensive Russian gas supplies," Lithuania's President Dalia Grybauskaitė has said on Sunday.

She spoke in Croatia after meeting with European Council President Herman Van Rompuy at a meeting which addressed the agenda of Lithuania's EU Council presidency.

"The biggest obstacle to EU economic growth and competitiveness, the President said, are high energy prices. Therefore, the creation of the EU internal energy market, the development of alternatives to expensive Russian gas supplies, the implementation of the 3rd energy package, and the eradication of energy islands are the objectives shared by all of Europe to ensure competitive prices," the Lithuanian President's Office said in a press release.

According to the release, on November 4-5, Vilnius will host a conference on finalizing the EU internal energy market where decisions will be made on key European energy projects.

Lithuania currently buys all gas from the Russian Gazprom concern at prices it says are higher than those paid by other European countries.
