"Corruption takes new shapes, fraudsters and deceivers become increasingly ingenious, and they mainly target expensive projects that are vital for the state. Corruption involves influential politicians, businessmen and officials, therefore, efforts against corruption require intelligent leadership, clear priorities and no reservations," the president said in a press release.

After the meeting, presidential adviser Daiva Ulbinaitė did not elaborate on which businesspeople and politicians engaged in corruption activities.

"If you're asking for specific names, we did not discuss or mention them today; however, the tendency has been observed," she said.

Ulbinaitė also noted that, in the president's opinion, the Special Investigation Service "should keep a closer eye on municipalities, particularly on public procurement and distribution of European Union (EU) aid."

Urbanavičius said the investigations underway in the state agency prove engagement of influential businessmen, officials and politicians in corruption.
