Lithuanian president says discussions on same-sex partnership are premature

Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė says discussions on introducing same-sex partnerships in Lithuania are premature. She did not, however, express her position on the issue.

"I think these discussions in Lithuania are very premature and are only starting. I think it's worth holding discussions on any issue in Lithuania. And when the time comes, then we'll decide. I think it's a very premature discussion," the president told journalists on Thursday.

The Liberal Movement is the only party in Lithuania in favor of same-sex partnerships. Man-woman partnerships are not legalized in Lithuania either.

Same-sex couples are currently allowed to get married in eight European countries: Belgium, Denmark, Iceland, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden. The British parliament has also recently gave its initial backing to same-sex marriages. Gay partnerships are legalized in 13 European countries.
