“I hope that this issue will be finally adopted in June,” he told reporters on Wednesday.
On Wednesday, the European Parliament called for a fresh negotiation of the EU budget for the rest of the decade that was agreed by the bloc‘s leaders at a summit last month.
“As far as I know, the European Parliament urges to increase the Union’s budget revenues and expenditures somewhat,” Butkevičius said.
He reminded that EP President Martin Schulz warned before the EU summit in February that overly drastic cuts in the EU’s budget might prompt MEPs to block the budget.
“He [Schulz] said before the European summit that the parliamentarians will definitely vote against unless we reach a compromise,” Butkevičius said.
After more than 24 hours of negotiations, on February 8 Lithuania's President Dalia Grybauskaitė said that the overall package of EU financial support earmarked for Lithuania in the Union’s new budget would swell by nearly 10 percent, to 44.5 billion litas (EUR 12.9b), as compared with the 2007-2013 period.
