"This is the choice made by the Social Democrats, and I submitted the candidate, Evaldas Gustas, earlier today, as I have meetings (with the president) every Monday morning," Butkevičius told journalists at parliament on Monday.

Presidential adviser Daiva Ulbinaitė told BNS the president will meet with the candidate on Tuesday.

Until last Friday, Gustas was the chancellor at the Ministry of Interior Affairs.

Last Wednesday, Grybauskaitė signed a decree to dismiss the Social Democratic Party's Birutė Vėsaitė as the minister of economy. Vėsaitė had to step down amid a suspected conflict of interests.
