Asked to specify the top concern faced by today’s world, 53 percent of the respondents in Lithuania mentioned economic problems and 33 percent referred to social problems, according to the poll conducted by WIN-Gallup International in 56 countries worldwide.

“Lithuania’s people are now mostly concerned about economic problems, poverty, unemployment. However, quite many mention corruption as one of the top today’s concerns,” Inga Nausediene, chairwoman of market research company RAIT, said in a press release.

Slightly less than one-fifth, or 17 percent, of Lithuania’s population mentioned poverty and the gap between the rich and the poor as the biggest world’s concern. Some 16 percent mentioned unemployment, and 14 percent, corruption.

Other top concerns included criminality (6.3 pct of the polled), drugs (6 pct), wars and conflicts (3.3 pct), terrorism (2.6 pct), healthcare (2.5 pct), globalization and fair global trade (2.1 pct), human rights (1.9 pct), environmental protection (1.6 pct), education concerns (1.2 pct), and religious fundamentalism (0.3 pct).

The poll of 57,000 people in 56 countries around the world did not include Estonia or Latvia.

RAIT, which carried out the poll on behalf of WIN-Gallup International in Lithuania, polled more than 1,000 Lithuanians aged between 15 and 74 years in February.
