MEPs address Putin over Navalny’s health: “responsibility falls on you”

Members of various groups of the European Parliament have addressed Russian President Vladimir Putin over the rapidly deteriorating health of opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who has been imprisoned in the Pokrov penal colony and is currently hospitalised in its jail.

“Mr President, no court has sentenced A. Navalny to death. Thus, the Russian prisons administration and its superior institutions must ensure his life and physical inviolability. We are talking about compliance to the law and common humanity,” wrote the MEPs.

They noted that if A. Navalny were to die in prison or if his health is irreparably damaged, the responsibility for this will fall on Mr Putin’s shoulders, and his reputation as a president will be tarnished in the eyes of the international community.

“Currently, relations between the Russian Federation and the 27 countries we represent at the European Parliament are fairly tense, and we do not need yet another serious reason for worsening relations,” the MEPs noted.
