Kęstutis Jucevičius won the competition for the post of director of the Financial Crime Investigation Service, Ramunė Hazir, adviser to the minister of interior affairs, told BNS on Friday.

Jucevičius is currently head of the Operational Activity Unit of the Special Task Board of the FCIS. It was not the first time he took part in the competition. He was also among candidates in 2010 when Vitalijus Gailius was selected director of the FCIS. According to information available to BNS, Jucevičus came in second then.

On Thursday, the Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats demanded that Interior Minister Raimundas Palaitis issued an order to suspend the competition.

Speaking to journalists after the government's meeting on Wednesday, Palaitis said it would be "rational" to quickly implement structural reforms. Nevertheless, leadership of the Liberal and Center Union, which delegated Palaitis to the post, said on Thursday that the competition could only be stopped by court.

The competition was called a few weeks ago after Palaitis sacked Vitalijus Gailius from the post. Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius said the decision was a mistake, submitting a proposal to the president that she should dismiss the minister. The president rejected Kubilius' proposition.

A Vilnius court has accepted Gailius' appeal against unlawful dismissal from his post but decided not to suspend the competition.

Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius has called the competition that was allowed to go ahead despite legal and politcal uncertainty pathetic and wrong.

"This decision is pathetic and morally incorrect. The minister of interior affairs has failed to implement the decision in favor of which he himself voted in the government. It could have been avoided if Palaitis had resigned, as it was suggested," the prime minister's reaction was communicated to BNS on Friday by his adviser Virgis Valentinavičius.
