The meeting lasted less than 15 minutes.

"The main issue we talked about, as it is a very relevant topic, was the Lithuanian Presidency over the EU Council, you know that I have a lot of experience in this area as I have been a deputy chairman of the (Seimas) Committee on European Affairs for six years and the entire program and all actions Lithuania will have to do have been discussed for the last six years, especially during the recent years," he told reporters after the meeting.

Barakauskas, a former MP, is currently unemployed.

"At the moment, as my term ended, I still cannot work as I am receiving state compensation for the period I did not spend on vacation. As I have worked in the Seimas for six years," he said.

Barakaskas, 60, served as Lithuania's minister of transport and communications in 2001 and was a member of the Seimas in 2000-2004 and 2006-2012.

"He's an experienced politician, a long-standing Seimas member, a former minister. He has headed various business associations and has gone on traineeships abroad," Rolandas Paksas, leader of the Order and Justice Party, told BNS when asked why Barauskas had been chosen for the post.

According to the Order and Justice Party website, Barakauskas is an adviser to Paksas. He was on the party's list during the recent Seimas elections but failed to win a seat.

The Order and Justice Party won 11 seats in parliament but now has only 10 after the death of MP Julius Veselka.
