"President has authorized the government to take all measures required to defend the national economic interests," Daiva Ulbinaitė, an adviser to Grybauskaitė, told BNS on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius, who is currently on a visit to Rome, said through his spokeswoman that he would comment on the planned measures later.

Butkevičius said on Tuesday that Lithuanian officials were directly communicating with Russian officials but had no concrete information yet when the tightened checks would be lifted.

Russia last week tightened checks on goods transported by Lithuanian haulers, causing significant delays and losses.

The European Commission on Tuesday called on Russia to immediately lift restrictions imposed on Lithuanian goods, saying that that the measures hindering trade seemed to be unfounded and discriminatory.

Nikolay Tsukanov, the governor of the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, said that vehicles with Lithuanian plates were not being subjected to any special procedures on the border.
