Speaking about the bills registered for the spring session, Grybauskaitė highlighted the legal acts regulating compensation of the pensions that were reduced in the wake of the crisis.
She met with members of the Seimas board on Thursday, listed the priorities and emphasized that the parliament should not, in the light of the upcoming general elections, allow political ambitions overshadow the most important tasks, the President's Office said in a press release.
“Pre-election campaigns should not keep the Seimas from addressing strategic state issues. I urge politicians to be responsible, reach beyond their political ambitions and rally for completion of the tasks that have been started in order to enhance energy independence and financial stability, as well as restore social justice," Grybauskaitė said.
According to her, ensuring Lithuania's energy independence is the key objective, intimately related to the country's political independence. The past three years have resulted in significant progress in restructuring energy and heating sector, she said. It is now important that the spring session adopts all the laws that are necessary for implementation of strategic energy projects, the president added.
Grybauskaitė also emphasized financial discipline and living within the means available.
“Rigid discipline helped us escape financial collapse during the crisis. We should continue handling state finances in a responsible manner (…). It is vital to ratify the European fiscal discipline agreement, which stipulates provisions that will not allow overspending and putting the state in debts," the president said.
According to the press release, Grybauskaitė and members of the Seimas board also discussed VAT privileges for press, other initiatives to improve the judicial system, acceleration of trials, improvement of business environment and enhancing competition.
