Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius says that he wants Lithuania's answers to proposals from Russia's gas giant Gazprom to be prepared as soon as possible.

"There are no deadlines, but we want them (answers) as soon as possible, because autumn is coming. What we want is a different gas price. This is basically what we are seeking. Time will show how this is going to happen," he told LRT Radio.

Lithuanian Energy Minister Jaroslav Neverovič is currently evaluating Gazprom's proposals, the prime minister said.

Lithuania received Gazprom's proposals on Friday. The government would not comment on the contents of the proposals.

Butkevičius said after a meeting with Gazprom CEO Alexey Miller earlier this month that negotiators would go on with talks after receiving written proposals from the Russian company.

The parties then refused to make any comments about the conditions under which Gazprom might reduce the price of gas for Lithuania. However, they said that the negotiators were discussing a 5-billion-litas (EUR 1.45b) claim lodged by Lithuania with the Stockholm arbitration tribunal, as well as a long-term gas supply contract. They said that the implementation of the EU's Third Energy Package was not being discussed.

Miller then said that further talks would deal with Gazprom's investments in Lithuania, gas transit to the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, and "commercial issues".
