Lawmakers voted by secret ballot 95-6 with 3 abstentions and 8 ballot papers were found invalid.

Earlier, all political groups in the Seimas as well as the Seimas Committees on National Security and Defense and Legal Affairs backed Urbanavicius.

Urbanavicius, 40, started working at the Special Investigation Service a year ago. He is currently first deputy director of the SIS.

Pursuant to the existing law, the president nominates a candidate to SIS director and, upon the Seimas approval, appoints and dismisses him/her.

SIS director is appointed for a term of five years. The SIS's former director Zimantas Pacevicius was dismissed by the president after the Seimas approval last October.
