Signing of Lithuania’s inter-party energy agreement postponed indefinitely

The signing of an energy agreement between Lithuania’s parties has been postponed indefinitely as the ruling coalition has decided to assess the activity of previous authorities in the energy sector and still remains at odds on the project of a new nuclear power plant in Visaginas, the Verslo Žinios business daily reports.

Prime Minister’s spokeswoman told the daily that the signing of the document had been postponed and it could be drawn up after taking a decision on the future of nuclear energy.

Prime Minister earlier said that the decision on the new nuclear facility would be taken by July. However, this might not actually happen. The daily quotes Robertas Dargis, president of the Lithuanian Confederation of Industrialists, as saying that, as far as he knows, the authorities are likely to make the decision on the nuclear facility in the coming fall or even later.

A new National Energy Strategy, which should state clearly whether the project of the new nuclear facility would be continued, will probably be submitted to the Seimas (parliament) in September or October.
