The issue was discussed during Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius' visit in New York where he presented Lithuania's aim of achieving non-permanent membership in the UN Security Council for the 2014-2015 tenure.

„In response to the minister’s invitation to pay a visit to Lithuania this year, the UN secretary general said that we only need to agree on a mutually suitable date,“ the ministry said in a press release.

Linkevicius also presented Lithuania's position to „continue to pay great attention to mediation and peaceful conflict resolution, to the human rights issues and women’s empowerment, as well as to the strengthening of the rule of law and democratic institutions.“

According to the press release, the Lithuanian diplomacy chief and the UN leader also discussed the relevant issues for Lithuania's upcoming presidency over the European Council.

During his stay in New York, Linkevicius also met with ambassadors of current non-permanent members of the UN Security Council and signed a communique on establishing diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Suriname.

Lithuania is running for 2014-2015 non-permanent UN Security Council membership in the elections in October. It submitted its application for the single slot for the Eastern European region back in 1996.
