The two leaders said on Tuesday that the name of the new party should incorporate names of both political forces. Merger will be decided by councils of both parties over the weekend.
"Naturally, center political forces in Lithuania should merge. (They are) scattered and we should fill the field in a good way, and we have to be the first ones to do it, then our political formation will be stronger, larger and perhaps the largest in the center," Uspaskich told journalists.
In his words, the new party would be a "center force" in terms of ideology. Uspaskich also said he had studied data of sociological surveys, which suggest that the Order and Justice party would be the second choice of the Labor Party's electorate in elections, and vice versa.
He said he was personally in support of the merger.
Should the two parties merge, their political group would be the largest political force in parliament. However, both Paksas and Uspaskich said on Tuesday they did not intend to review ministerial posts or question Algirdas Butkevičius', the leader of the Social Demorats, as the prime minister.
"I think Algirdas Butkevičius is a good prime minister and today our country needs political stability as never before," said Paksas.
