"I personally believe that she (Grybauskaitė) is a perfect candidate for highest positions in Europe," Reding said in an interview to the Lietuvos Žinios daily when asked about Grybauskaitė's chances of becoming EU president.
Reding and Grybauskaitė used to work together in the European Commission.
"Since I worked with Grybauskaitė, I can say from my own experience that she is a hard-working and dutiful European," Reding said.
The fact that Grybauskaitė is already being called the EU's future president behind the curtain was recently mentioned by Henri Malosse, president of the European Economic and Social Committee, during his visit in Vilnius.
Grybauskaitė herself has so far refused to reveal whether she is going to run for EU president.
"I will deal with my career fate only after the end of the presidency, as I have already mentioned, at the start of next year. And I will be where people of Lithuania will tell me to," the Lithuanian president has said once.
The election of a new EU president are scheduled for November 2014 when the second term of incumbent Herman Van Rompuy ends.
