Seventy-six lawmakers voted in favor of accepting his resignation, seven were against and 35 abstained.
Gedvilas says his decision to resign as the speaker of parliament was voluntary.
"Nobody put any pressure on me. I made the decision after discussing it with fellow party members," Gedvilas told parliament.
In his words, the work of the Seimas will not be affected by the change of the speaker.
The ruling Labor Party announced on Wednesday night that the first Deputy Speaker of the Seimas, Vytautas Gapšys, was stepping down and suspending his party leadership. Speaker of the Seimas, Gedvilas, also announced his resignation in solidarity with Gapšys.
"We both came to work with Vytautas Gapšys. We were both elected. That's my decision," Gedvilas said.
On Thursday, the Seimas was scheduled to hold a no-confidence vote against Gapšys, initiated by the opposition and motivated by the fact that Vilnius Regional Court had found Gapšys guilty of fraud in the Labor Party's fraudulent bookkeeping case. He was fined 35,750 litas (EUR 10,356). The sentence has not come into force yet as Gapšys appealed.
