Vytautas Leškevičius appointed vice- foreign minister in charge of Lithuania's EU presidency

Political Director of the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Vytautas Leškevičius, has been appointed the 4th vice-minister of foreign affairs. He will be in charge of coordinating preparations for the Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the ministry announced on Friday.

Lithuania is scheduled to take over the rotating EU Presidency in the second half of 2013.

The Lithuanian government approved the creation of the 4th vice-minister of foreign affairs position in February.

Leškevičius has been in the diplomatic service since 1996. He worked at the Lithuanian embassy in Germany, lead the NATO division in the Ministry, and was also director of Transatlantic Cooperation and Security Policy Department.

He has served as political director since fall 2011, when he returned to Vilnius from Lithuania's Permanent Mission to NATO.

Leškevičius will continue acting as political director and coordinate the work of the ministry's divisions to achieve key foreign and security policy goals.
