"Vilnius Municipality has received a request from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to name one of the alleys after the Righteous among the Nations. The municipality has only started looking into this issue and is looking for a proper location," Artūras Blotnys, director of the Urban Development Department of Vilnius Municipality, said.
Last year, one of Vilnius streets was named after Juozas Rutkauskas who saved over 150 Jews hiding them in his apartment in Vilnius and later helping them to leave Lithuania with forged documents. He was executed for helping Jews in 1944.
830 Lithuanians have been named Righteous among the Nations, although there were many more savers of Jews, and the list is still being updated.
Around 90 percent of the Jewish population of around 208,000 were killed during the Holocaust.
