"This has been a difficult week for the basketball world, there were many discussions and attempts to find solutions. I am convinced that the Lithuanian basketball is strong and will continue improving positions in Lithuania and the globe. I am grateful to Balčiūnas for the many years of work in the Lithuanian Basketball Federation, I am sure he will stay close to basketball and work for the benefit of the beloved sport," Sabonis, formerly a legendary Lithuanian basketball player, said in a press release.

Balčiūnas said his decision to resign was due to Sabonis' determination to stay in the Lithuanian Basketball Federation.

A new secretary general will be approved at the nearest meeting of the federation's executive committee in the end of October.

The intentions of Jonas Kazlauskas to stay as the head coach of the national team should be clarified shortly. BNS has not been able to get in touch with Kazlauskas who is currently in China.
