"The Security Council must declare unequivocally that any use of chemical weapons represents a grave violation of international law. Such use must be condemned in no uncertain terms, appropriate measures be taken, and those responsible must be brought to justice," reads a joint statement issued by the eight foreign ministers after a meeting in Sweden.
The foreign ministers of Estonia, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, and Sweden stated that failure to respond will weaken the respect for the global prohibition against the use of chemical weapons and the very authority of the Security Council itself.
Russia and China, permanent members of the UN Security Council, disapprove of intentions of US President Barack Obama to attack Syria.
The US maintain that the regime of Syrian President Bashar al Assad is responsible for the use of chemical weapons, which claimed over 1,000 lives.
"We called upon members of the UN Security Council, particularly the permanent members – from our point of view, they should take the case seriously, as it is a special case after the end of the Cold War. In our opinion, the UN Security Council should not just assess but also take certain measures to bring the guilty people to justice," Lithuania's Foreign Minister Linas Linkevičius told BNS after the meeting.
