Brussels to be introduced to Lithuania's Jewish culture

A week of events aimed at presenting culture of Lithuanian Jews starts on Thursday in Brussels.

The opening ceremony will be attended by director of the Belgian Jewish Community Center, Henri Gutman, who will give a welcome speech, Lithuania's Permanent Representative to the European Union, Raimundas Karbolis, Lithuania's Minister of Culture Arūnas Gelūnas and chairman of the parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs Emanuelis Zingeris.

According to the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, two exhibitions will be opened during the ceremony, with one revealing Holocaust facts through survivors' stories, and the second one depicting life of Lithuanian Jewish communities.

On Friday, there will be a screening of documentaries by French director Richard Copans, Vilnius and Les Disques de Rivka, telling about traces of Jews in the Lithuanian capital that was once called Jerusalem of the North.

Next Tuesday, a discussion and meetings with famous writer, journalist and historian, author of book Vilna, Wilno, Vilnius: Lietuvos Jeruzale (Vilna, Wilno, Vilnius: Lithuanian Jerusalem), Henri Minczeles, Lithuanian historian, diplomat Alfonsas Eidintas, and poet and publicist, the Jewish Community of Lithuania's spokesman abroad, Sergey Kanovich will be held.

The cycle of events will be wrapped up with a concert of Jewish music.

The events are being organized by Lithuania's Permanent Representation to the European Union in cooperation with the Lithuanian Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Culture as well as the Belgian Jewish Community Center in Brussels.
