Lithuania's former culture minister Arūnas Gelūnas is taking up a post as ambassador to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on Monday.

26 November is the date stipulated in President Dalia Grybauskaitė's decree on Gelūnas' appointment to the post.

Until appointment of a new culture minister, the position will be temporarily filled by Education and Science Minister Gintaras Steponavičius.

Lithuania has not had an ambassador to UNESCO since the recall of Ina Marčiulionytė in 2009.

Gelūnas told BNS last week that the absence of the ambassador deprived Lithuania of some visibility and influence.

In his words, some of the Lithuanian valuable properties – Kaunas Old Town with interwar architecture, personality and works by Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, wooden churches of Samogitia and the Hill of Crosses, resistance movement and the Genocide Museum, works by Kristijonas Donelaitis – could seek UNESCO recognition.
