Estonian President: Euro zone is evolving into new core of EU and small countries should better be in

The interest of small countries is to participate in decision making, Estonia’s President Toomas Hendrik Ilves says.

Asked by the Verslo Žinios business daily whether the euro zone needed the Baltic countries, he said: “Political coordination within the euro zone will be much closer than within the European Union (EU). This coordination will not necessarily be related with the currency. It would rather be the euro zone, which would become the foundation of a more integrated EU. And it is the interest of small countries, such as us, to participate in decision making.”

The euro zone is evolving into the core of the Community, Estonia’s President believes.

“At least it is heading in that direction. If it is heading there, we want to see what’s on the negotiating table. It’s better to sit at the table and discuss what will happen to the euro than stay behind the closed door and worry what they are speaking about and what will happen to your currency,” he added.
