Events to be held to commemorate anniversary of Lithuania's first post-Soviet president Algirdas Brazauskas

Commemorative events and exhibitions will be held in Lithuania to mark the 80th anniversary of the country's late President Algirdas Mykolas Brazauskas. Unfortunately, organizers have not managed to issue a book of memories in time and it's also unknown whether a bridge, a street, or a square will be named after Brazauskas, the Lietuvos Žinios daily reports.

The Lithuanian Seimas, starting its last pre-election session on 10 September, plans to hold sittings twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with one exception on 20 September when a solemn sitting to mark the anniversary will be held. Seimas Speker Irena Degutienė and Algirdas Butkevičius, leader of the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania, will deliver speeches at the sitting.

An exhibition about Brazauskas' political career will be also opened at the Seimas.

Asked why a book of memories had not been published before the jubilee, Butkevičius said it was decided to postpone this work to after the election. Besides, foreign leaders who knew Brazauskas have not sent their memories about the Lithuanian leader yet, Butkevičius says.

The National Museum will host an exposition of gifts received by Brazauskas. People will also be able to have a look at his personal collection of amber.

22 September, Brazauskas's birthday, will start with a service at St. Peter and Paul's Church. The late president's activities and achievements will be also commemorated at a conference organized by the Science Academy. A solemn ceremony will be held at Antakalnis Cemetery where he is buried.

In the afternoon, a memorial stone will be unveiled by the family of Brazauskas' daughter Audronė Usonienė at a homestead in Švenčionys District, eastern Lithuania, where Brazauskas planted an oak-wood to mark the Millennium of Lithuania. Events patronized by the president's second daughter Laima Mertinienė will take place in Kaišiadorys, central Lithuania.

The social democrats hope Vilnius City Municipality will soon make the decision to rename Žirmūnai Bridge in Vilnius after Brazauskas.

A stamp to mark the 80th anniversary of the first president of independent Lithuania will be also issued on 22 September.
