"In the nearest future, within the nearest 2-3 months, we intend to hold negotiations with our Lithuanian colleagues, discuss and finalize the process of implementation of the agreement. We're looking forward to enforcement of the new scheme," the diplomat said in an interview to the Lietuvos Žinios daily on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the Belorussian ambassador said in April that Minsk had doubts about the facilitated movement regime with Lithuania amid the European Union's (EU) sanctions for the regime of Belarus' hard-line President Alexander Lukashenko.
"The Lithuanian side has prepared all the necessary documents. It says it's ready. And here it immediately applies sanctions. When Lithuanian politicians make loud statements about expulsion of Belorussian ambassadors, what border travels are we talking about? I believe we should first learn to maintain a dialogue," the ambassador then said in an interview to a Kremlin-linked Russian news agency Regnum.
In the end of February, Lithuania's Foreign Ministry sent an official note to Belarus to notify it of Lithuania's readiness for a facilitated border-crossing scheme. For the system to take effect, a relevant step on the Belorussian side will be needed.
The Lithuanian-Belorussian agreement allows residents of the border region to cross the border without a visa and with special permits for local transport for a period of up to 90 days per six months.
