Ažubalis also stressed the importance of the neighboring country's support for regional energy and transport infrastructure projects.

The Lithuanian foreign minister also discussed bilateral relations with Latvian President Andris Berzins, Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis, Speaker of the Latvian Parliament Solvita Aboltina, Minister of Foreign Affairs Edgars Rinkevics and Minister of Economy Daniels Pavluts.

"Our cooperation in implementing strategic projects, solidarity in multinational forums as well as economic relations are great. Being so close, as well as being the only Balts in the worlds, we have to step up cultural cooperation, youth exchange, building of a common information space and, finally, emotional ties," the minister was quoted as saying.

Latvian Minister of Foreign Affairs Rinkevics told journalists after the meeting that cultural and educational cooperation between the two states was discussed with his Lithuanian counterpart.

The upcoming Lithuanian Presidency of the EU Council was also touched upon during the meeting. It was agreed to continue consultations on more effective diplomatic representation in third countries.

The Latvian minister said after the meeting that Latvian experts would also work at the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs during the Lithuanian Presidency of the EU Council.

Ažubalis also expressed concern over the construction of nuclear power plants in Kaliningrad and Belarus in breach of international nuclear safety and environmental requirements. The Lithuanian foreign minister called on Latvia to express its clear position on the issue.
