Speaking to Vilnius journalists after meeting with Lithuania's President Dalia Grybauskaitė on Tuesday, Van Rompuy expressed hope that the new administration in Rome would continue the policies of fiscal consolidation.

"I am convinced they will take up their responsibilities in due time and that Italy will remain a stable country in the euro zone," said the president of the European Council.

In his words, Italy can only afford new “nuances” and “accents” but the general road is clear.

The recent elections in Italy did not produce a clear winner, as left- and right-wing parties secured about equal vote.
