The Gmina Council will discuss the school closure on Wednesday but it has already been decided that this decision will not be final yet.
"We can make a decision on plans to close the schools. If it's backed, the issue would still remain open for at least three months and we should make the final decision regarding the closure by late May for us to have three months to dismiss people by September 1," Liškauskas told BNS on Tuesday.
He said he had raised the issue of funding of Lithuanian schools during his phone conversations with the Polish vice-minister of education and the voivode of Podlaskie Voivodeship.
"If we make decisions on plans to close the three schools, we will be looking for additional funding on the Polish side over the next three months. It's hard to say whether we'll be successful," Liškauskas said.
He also plans to discuss education in Poland with Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius next week. The Lithuanian Government is thinking of providing up to 400,000 litas (around EUR 116,000) from the state budget to Lithuanian schools in Poland.
"We will have a meeting next week and will discuss not only short-term funding for those schools but we also need to know what number of students will be in a few years and find agreement on this problem not to arise in the middle of the academic year or as we move to the next year," Butkevičius told the Lithuanian Radio on Tuesday.
The Lithuanian premier also said the issue would be also discussed with the Polish government.
Polish Lithuanians say Poland's Ministry of Education acknowledged the Lithuanian school problem a year and a half ago and promised to increase the student's basket for Lithuanian schools by 80 percent but it grew only 20 percent.
