Latvia has offered its full support for Lithuania over trade restrictions introduced by Russia, Latvia's Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs said on Thursday.

In his words, the Russian sanctions are unfounded and the EU needs to be united.

"Latvia fully supports Lithuania against unfounded trade sanctions by Russia, EU must act in unity." Rinkēvičs tweeted after meeting with his Lithuanian counterpart Linas Linkevičius.

In September, Russia introduced additional border checks for Lithuanian haulers and then banned imports of Lithuanian dairy earlier this week.

Moscow says it was forced to take action in response to lower quality but Lithuanian and EU officials see it as a politically-motivated move.

Lithuania is holding the rotating EU presidency in the second half of this year and is actively promoting the Eastern Partnership program aimed at bringing six post-Soviet countries closer to the EU.
