According to the data, Lithuania ranks fourth in the EU in terms of the indicator, with lower figures reported in Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Poland (4.7 percent, 4.9 percent and 5.4 percent, respectively). The EU's average is 14.1 percent.
The figure stands at 13.3 percent in Latvia and 11.6 percent in Estonia.
The highest population percentage with basic education only is found in Malta (36.9 pct), Portugal (28.7 pct), Spain (28.4 pct), Italy (18.8 pct), and Romania (18.4).
According to the statistics, the share of women with basic education only is smaller than that of men in nearly all countries.
The research also analyzed the average age of university and college students, which stands at 21.7 in Lithuania, as compared with the EU average of 22.1.
The lowest age average of those enrolled in universities and colleges was reported in Ireland (20.2), France (20.5), Belgium, and Malta (20.7). Meanwhile, the oldest students are in Sweden (25.3), Denmark (25.2), Finland (24.5), and Austria (23.8).

Lithuania among EU leaders in terms of population education
Some 8.1 percent of Lithuania's population aged between 18 and 24 have acquired basic education only, and the percentage is among the smallest in the European Union (EU), shows data published by the EU's statistics agency.
